Bieber is the WCL Player of the Week
From Press Release
UC Santa Barbara frosh pitcher Shane Bieber of the Cowlitz Black Bears was named WCL Player of the Week for his masterful June 25th home performance vs. the Kitsap BlueJackets. The right-hander tossed 7 shutout innings while allowing only three hits, walking none and striking out 11 batters to earn the win, as Cowlitz topped Kitsap 3-0 at David Story Field.
There were many other deserving players, including a trio each from the two hottest teams in the West Coast League, the Yakima Valley Pippins and Bend Elks who both went 6-0 for the week. The Pippins were led offensively by JC Snyder of BYU and Vince Fernandez of UC Riverside. Snyder scored 9 runs, walked 10 times and went 6-for-14 with a homer while reaching base two-thirds of the time (.667 on base percentage); Fernandez homered twice, collected 9 RBIs and went 8-for-22. Yakima starting pitcher Austin Woodward of Oregon State earned a win at Kelowna by twirling 6 shutout innings while only allowing three hits and walking one. The Elks mashed their way to an undefeated week led by Billy King of OSU (13-for-26, 4 doubles, 10 runs), Jake Peevyhouse of Arizona State (7-for-15, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 10 runs, .625 obp) and Grant Newton of Seattle (9-for-18, 1 HR, 9 RBI, .630 obp).
Also given consideration for Player of the Week were Klamath’s Steven Packard of Oregon who went 11-for-20 with 4 doubles and a .654 on base percentage; Medford’s Victor Garcia of University of Texas, Pan American who homered in three consecutive games at Kiger Stadium in Klamath Falls (June 27-29) while collecting 13 RBIs over that span; Bellingham’s Aaron Sandefur of Bellevue College who earned a 1-0 home win over Kelowna by tossing 7 shutout innings while walking 5, striking out 5 and allowing only a single hit; and Victoria’s Gabe Clark of Oregon State who went 8-for-23, blasted two homers and recorded 8 RBI.
